Best time to visit Mallorca

The majority of tourists that visit Mallorca for a beach vacation do so in the summer. However, the island is a year-round attraction thanks to mild winters and comfortable temperatures.

In Mallorca, the main season starts in June and ends in September. However, the shoulder seasons in April–May and September–October are the best times to visit Mallorca because the weather is pleasant and there aren’t many tourists around. It’s a great time to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking because most hotels and restaurants are open.

How to move around Mallorca? We can be your best travel guide!

The best thing you can do is to rent a car. It is far more comfortable and practical to be able to drive yourself around the area, allowing you to go on day trips and see off-the-beaten-path locations.

Tip: try to book a car as early as possible. The prices can vary significantly.

Using the island’s public transportation is another option for getting around. There is a robust bus network connecting Mallorca’s capital, Palma, with the other islands’ towns and cities. For routes and schedules visit EMT Palma or Transport de les Illes Balears.

Where to stay?

Remember that Mallorca is a large island with four main areas, each with its own key attractions and vibe, when deciding where to stay. The south will be very different from the north in terms of what you can expect.

South Coast:

The most prominent tourist destinations are located here, including the capital city of Palma de Mallorca and its most well-known beaches.

Highlights of the south coast include Colonia Sant Jordi, Playa de Palma (Arenal), Magaluf, Palma Nova, Santa Ponsa, Puerto Portals, and Palma de Mallorca (commonly referred to simply as “Palma”).

East Coast:

This is a wonderful area to stay fpor families as it is home to the majority of the island’s family-friendly resorts.

The beaches are lovely and often framed by pine trees, lapped by turquoise waves (compared to the sandier terrain of the south coast).

If you want a quiet vacation with some nightlife, the east coast is a fabulous option.

Cala Millor, Cala Ratjada, and Cala d’Or are the best locations on the east coast.

North Coast:

The north coast of Mallorca is a less visited / crowdy area of the island.

It’s a terrific location for couples seeking a calm retreat as well as families traveling with kids due to the shallow waters and uncrowded beaches.

But there are also mountains. The north and west coasts of Spain are a must-see if you prefer the idea of more untamed and rural adventure travel like hiking. The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range is a great place to spend your time.

West Coast:

The coolest area to stay in Mallorca for a more isolated, away-from-the-crowds vacation is on the west coast. And it’s one of Mallorca’s most beautiful areas.

Highlights of the west coast include Deia, Bunyola, a highland town, and the charming seaside villages of Port de Soller and Banyalbufar.

1. Visit Palma

The first thing you should do is explore the old town of Palma. Once you arrive, be sure to explore the magnificent, majestic Cathedral of Mallorca. We took a tour that cost us around 9 eur and it was the best experience ever. Book your tour here. If you enjoy breathtaking views, it’s without a doubt among the top things to do in Mallorca.

There are numerous shopping streets in the old town, as well as lovely tiny roads where you can be easily lost. You can easily spend the whole day seeing the city and taking in its rich culture and stunning architecture.

Tip 1: we recommend you wear comfortable shoes if you decide to go on a long walk.

Tip 2: book your tours beforehand, as it becomes really crowded, especially during the high season, and the tickets can be sold out.

2. Rent a boat in Port d’Andratx

One of the most iconic things to do is rent a boat in Mallorca and go to the hidden “calas” for snorkeling. During our trip, we went to Port d’Andratx for a lovely lunch at Restaurante Savantry. But then we saw an advertisement for renting boats, and we couldn’t resist doing it. And it was so much fun, such a great experience. It cost us around 90 euros for 3 hours.

3. Go for a walk in Deia

Deia is one of the prettiest villages on the island and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Deia is home to artists, poets, and people who can afford the area’s expensive real estate.

There are several places to dine and drink in the village, including the Michelin-starred Es Racó d’Es Teix, as well as a few noteworthy little boutiques, galleries, and shops. It is worthwhile to take some time to explore the area and take in the beautifully renovated old stone homes tucked away in tiny lanes.

4. Take the train to Soller

There is a lovely narrow-gauge train that travels to the village of Soller from Palma de Mallorca.

Since 1912, the train has been entartaining tourists across the jagged Serra de Tramuntana mountain range.

The train is super vintage and all wooden. It feels crazy to ride it.

The Soller train ride, which goes through 13 tunnels, lasts around an hour. The view is so lovely that the time goes by way too quickly! The price of a round trip (Palma – Puerto de Sóller – Palma) is 32 eur. and you can book your ticket here.

5. Visit some cool caves

Let me tell you, one of the coolest things to do is to go to the Caves of Ham (Cuevas dels Hams). The last time we used this tour, it was the best experience ever (and so affordable, which is great).

6. Go wine tasting

Mallorca also makes some excellent wines. Given its environment and the fact that the island is home to more than 70 vineyards.

Bodega Ribas is the oldest winery still in operation on the island, having produced wine for more than 300 years.

Taking a tour of the winery is among the best things to do on Mallorca for wine enthusiasts. After that, you can enjoy some of their wines and tapas while seated in a charming patio. One of the most thrilling tours we’ve ever done is this one: This is a highly-rated guided wine tasting tour.

Have a Guided Tour

We absolutely loved exploring this city. Clearly, there are so many things to do that you can easily spend days and even weeks here. However, if you have only one or two days to spare we really encourage you, to have a guided tour.

There are several options for exploring the town using some tours:

1. If you are on a budget but still want to have that “tour-guided” experience, feel free to book a “Free Walking Tour”. This is an app where you can choose any tour they have in the city and pay whatever you feel like paying.

2. If you are open to a variety of cool experiences, “Get Your Guide” is the best place to book the most unique and fun activities. This is what we personally always use, and we are always happy with the service.
